Thirteen Codebases, One Method

Today I ran a Skill-Driven Development workshop for a Item Consulting in Oslo. One instruction: bring a real codebase you actually work on.

A legacy migration from a twenty-year-old monolith. A farm animal tracking system. An Android app for sound engineers. A disc golf app. And nine others.

Same method. For all of them.

Each participant left with a structured skill library encoding 30+ years of software development experience, a knowledge navigation layer that lets Claude orient in any codebase in three tool calls instead of thirty, and their own domain skills written during the day. In practice: a noticeably smarter AI assistant and more than 30% reduction in token usage.

The first hours were the same for everyone. Collaborating with Claude to write 10 to 30 domain skills for their own application. Encoding what they knew — business rules, constraints, patterns — that had never been written down before. Rules obvious to them, invisible to anyone else. And to any AI.

Around hour five I gave the room a different task: go wild. Build something that felt impossible yesterday.

What arrived: animated mooing cows. Seasonal themes. Features that would have taken weeks shipped in minutes. Not because the AI got smarter in five hours — because the people using it did. The context was built. The skills were in place. The friction was gone.

What was impossible yesterday is possible today and easy tomorrow.

A few participants were not developers. The methodology handled it without adjustment.

The room went quiet around hour two. Not bored quiet. Working. Focused.

It is still quiet now.

Totto ↩: Tom Simonsen — thank you. "Game-changing" is exactly what we're going for. Glad you were in the room. :)

Totto ↩: Xesca Alabart 🌈 — geography is the one constraint we haven't cracked yet. Working on it. 😄

Greate workshop Thor, a lot of new skills just during one working day. Absolutely a game-changer 👏 : Greate workshop Thor, a lot of new skills just during one working day. Absolutely a game-changer 👏
