Are We Ready?¶

I'm preparing a presentation for Item Consulting AS next Friday, and I keep coming back to one question:
Are we ready for what's happening?
Over the last month, I've shared the details with you—building a 200K-line production Java library in 11 days that should have taken 9-24 months. Not theory. Not demos. Production code with 7,461 tests, manufacturing compliance, zero bugs.
The first reaction was always: "That's impossible."
The second: "That only works for you."
But here's what I'm seeing now: It's not just me anymore.
The pattern is repeating. Different domains. Different codebases. Different developers. Same systematic methodology. Early results: 10-30x productivity in weeks, not months.
The timeline I'm seeing:
- Today: 1% using systematic methodology
- 12 months: 30%
- 24 months: Table stakes
- 36 months: Taught in bootcamps
The gap between "using AI tools" (1.5-5x) and "systematic methodology" (10-30x) is the opportunity window.
And that window is 12-18 months.
The question I'm wrestling with as I prepare this presentation:
If development fundamentals changed—estimation models, team sizing, velocity assumptions—and we're still using approaches designed for a world that no longer exists...
Are we ready?
Is this real? Sustainable? Or am I seeing patterns(maybe I'm hallucinating as well?) that aren't there?

Definitely not ready. Most people don’t have the mindset necessary to work this way. The other issue is identity. AI taking over skills that humans self-identify with as part of their identity (something they studied and crafted over years) will be the most difficult thing to overcome.: Definitely not ready. Daniel Bentes: Daniel Bentes - totally! Human identity is essential! The mental toll we are about to pay is something I ponder on every day.

You named it precisely.
The toll happens when AI leads and the human executes. Ownership disappears because you didn't drive it — you reviewed it.
Flip the direction: your skill sets the course, AI executes. You stay the author. The craft doesn't disappear — it operates at a different altitude.
That's the distinction we've b...
