The Organisational Amnesia Problem¶
Here's a question most organisations can't answer: what was Pump 47's vibration reading before it failed?
Not a complex question. A specific measurement, at a specific point in time, for a specific piece of equipment. But in most asset management systems, if that reading was overwritten when the failure was logged, it's gone. The data archaeology required to reconstruct it — if it's possible at all — involves manual investigation across multiple systems, log files, and human memory.
The same pattern applies everywhere.
Who managed the Chicago office last quarter? Manual reconstruction from emails and calendar records.
Why was Alice's salary changed on March 15th? Three people need to be interviewed and audit logs manually correlated.
What was the organisational structure when the compliance issue occurred? Unknown, because the system shows the current structure, not the historical one.
This is organisational amnesia. Not a failure of data collection — modern enterprises generate unprecedented volumes of operational data. A failure of data architecture: systems designed to answer what things are, incapable of answering what they were.
Why the architecture fails¶
The root cause is that most systems store state, not events.
A database record for an employee contains their current manager, salary, role, and team. When that record changes, the old values are overwritten. The database is efficient. It is also historically blind.
Some systems add audit logs — a secondary table recording "this field changed from X to Y at time T." But an audit log is not the same as temporal storage. It records the change without capturing the full context: the organisational relationships that existed at that moment, the policies that were in effect, the other changes happening simultaneously. You have a list of events without the graph that makes them meaningful.
Temporal graph databases solve this by making events and relationships first-class. Every change is stored as an event with precise timestamps. Every relationship is stored with the period it was valid. You can reconstruct any past state, with full fidelity, across the entire relationship graph.
Where the same problem appears¶
The framing varies by domain. The underlying problem is identical.
HR and workforce analytics. Who managed whom, when. Why performance changed across teams. What the organisational structure looked like at any past date. Standard HR systems answer none of these historically.
Compliance and audit. Regulatory compliance frequently requires demonstrating what the process was, not what it is. GDPR requires showing the full permission chain for data usage. Financial regulation requires audit trails for specific decisions. "We had a log" is not the same as "we can reconstruct the complete decision context."
Asset management and industrial IoT. Equipment failure root cause analysis requires knowing the equipment's complete history — not just the last maintenance record, but the full sequence of sensor readings, maintenance decisions, and configuration changes that preceded the failure.
Fraud detection and risk. Coordinated fraud patterns are temporal. They unfold across time in ways that only become visible in retrospect. A system that can only see the current state of accounts misses the patterns that develop over days or weeks.
Supply chain. Supplier disruption cascades are the supply chain equivalent of ripple effects. A delay at one node propagates through dependent nodes in ways that depend entirely on what the network looked like at that moment — not what it looks like now.
Cybersecurity. Lateral movement in a network attack is a temporal phenomenon. Understanding it requires knowing what the network topology was at each step, what configuration changes preceded it, how it evolved. Historical blindness is a security liability.
Six domains. One problem: systems that can only see the present cannot explain the past.
What changes with temporal graphs¶
The specific questions become answerable.
When did this asset last fail? The query runs against the temporal store and returns the complete state of the asset at that moment — sensor readings, maintenance history, configuration, who approved what and when.
What was the organisational structure when the compliance issue occurred? Reconstruct it for any date with full accuracy.
Why did this fraud pattern succeed? Trace the sequence of events through the relationship graph, with the network topology that existed at each step.
These aren't exotic questions. They're the questions that every post-incident analysis, audit, and root cause investigation requires. Temporal graph infrastructure makes them answerable in seconds rather than days.
The conversation shift¶
There's a subtler change that happens when historical questions become answerable: the conversation changes.
When forensic investigation is slow and expensive, organisations learn to avoid it. Post-mortems are high-level. Root cause analysis stops at "we don't know." Compliance is demonstrated through process documentation rather than evidence.
When forensic investigation is fast and precise, the conversation deepens. Why didn't just become the question you ask when it's critical — it becomes the question you ask routinely, because you can. Decisions get better. Patterns get visible earlier. The organisation develops institutional memory that actually functions.
That's the shift temporal analytics enables. Not just better answers to questions you were already asking, but the ability to ask questions that were previously too expensive to investigate.
