The Blind Spot of Now¶
Most data systems are built to forget.
Not deliberately. It's just the natural consequence of how databases work. When you update a customer's address, the old address is gone. When you change a product price, the previous price is gone. When a process state changes, the prior state is gone.
Each of those deletions also deletes something else: the why.
What gets lost¶
The current state of a system tells you what is happening. It almost never tells you how you got there.
Causation lives in the path, not the destination. If you want to know why something failed, why a number is higher than expected, why a decision turned out the be wrong — the answer is in the sequence of events, the context at each decision point, the relationships between things that changed. All of that is in the history. And most systems don't keep the history.
The result is what you could call the blind spot of now. You can see your current situation with high fidelity. You can see aggregated trends over time. But the specific question — why did this happen, what changed, who decided what when, which earlier event caused this later one — is often unanswerable because the intermediate states no longer exist.
The market gap¶
The data industry has spent enormous resources solving one problem: storing massive amounts of current data. Data lakes, data warehouses, streaming infrastructure — the capacity to hold and query large volumes of data is now commoditised.
What remains largely unsolved is a different problem: understanding how data changes. Not just the final state, but the full history of transitions, the complete record of what was true at each moment in time.
This is the gap temporal analytics addresses. Not storing more data — storing the changes, the events, the evolution. Making the history as queryable as the present.
Think of it as giving systems a memory. Not just what things are, but what they were, and how they got from there to here.
Two case studies¶
Parcel delivery¶
A large urban delivery company had a predictable problem: major events — concerts, street festivals, football matches — created disruptions their systems couldn't anticipate. The team spent their time firefighting. And every time they resolved one incident, the lesson was lost. The system had no memory of what had happened before, so the same patterns repeated.
After implementing temporal analytics, the dynamic shifted from reactive to predictive. The system could recognise pre-event patterns, compare current conditions to historical analogues, and surface the intelligence from every previous disruption rather than rediscovering it each time.
Results: 76% drop in misdeliveries. 68% reduction in manual interventions. €3.2 million in annual savings. The underlying operations didn't change — what changed was the system's ability to learn from its own history.
Airline crew scheduling¶
A major international airline was scheduling flight crews with spreadsheets. Any rescheduling event required 48 hours of manual coordination. Pilot certifications and fatigue management were tracked reactively, which in aviation represents genuine safety risk.
With time-aware data, the picture changed completely. Scheduling became predictive — the system could see upcoming certification gaps, model fatigue accumulation, and propose rescheduling proactively rather than responding to problems after they'd materialised.
The 48-hour rescheduling window was cut by 73%. Annual savings from reduced delays and improved crew management: $8.7 million. But the more significant change was operational: from a team constantly fighting problems to one that could see them coming.
How it works¶
At the architecture level, the approach is three layers:
Connect (Alchemy): integration layer that reads from existing data sources without requiring a rip-and-replace of current systems.
Store the history (Aurora): rather than maintaining only current state, every change is recorded as an event with a timestamp. The database becomes a complete timeline, queryable at any point.

The comparison to conventional systems is stark. Traditional approach: stale, batch-updated data, development cycles measured in 12-18 months, high operational overhead from managing historical reconstruction manually. Temporal approach: real-time awareness, 3-6 month delivery timeframes, 40-60% operational cost reductions.
The difference isn't just speed. It's whether the system can answer questions that require knowing what was true in the past — and the proportion of genuinely important business questions that fall into that category is larger than most analytics teams realise.
The question worth asking¶
What critical history are you forgetting every single day?
That's the lens temporal analytics turns on your current data infrastructure. Not "how do we store more?" — you've already solved that. Not "how do we display it better?" — dashboards aren't the bottleneck.
The question is whether the information you need to understand why things are the way they are still exists anywhere in your systems. For most organisations, the honest answer is: only partially, and unevenly, and not in a form that supports systematic inquiry.
That's the blind spot of now. And it's fixable — but only if you start treating history as infrastructure, not as archive.
